The book comprehensively reflects the basic knowledge and the latest research results in the field of psychology. It gives thorough introduction to the knowledge system, basic concepts, basic theories, important figures, representative works and institutions of psychology in form of encyclopedic entries. The whole book has a hierarchical and focused design of the subject framework, including a total of 1,342 articles, with nearly 600 line drawings and historical pictures, a total of 1.665 million Chinese characters, and has made a full and detailed introduction to the origin and development of psychology. It is a professional reference book that comprehensively reflects the general knowledge of psychology.

This work is compiled by psychologist Zhang Kan as the editor-in-chief and five associate editors-in-chief, heading more than 400 contributors in various fields of psychology. Editor-in-chief, Dr. Zhang Kan, obtained his Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Illinois in 1990. He is professor at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was elected as a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2006. His research focused on attention and human performance, mental workload, situation awareness, driving and various issues in HCI. Dr. Zhang has served twice as the director of the Institute of Psychology, CAS, and served as the director of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was the president of the Chinese Psychological Society (CPS) from 2001 to 2009, vice president of International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) from 2008 to 2012. For his outstanding contributions in the field of engineering psychology, he was awarded the prize of Outstanding Contribution Award, International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) in 2010, first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2011, and Lifetime Achievement Award of the CPS in 2019. Associate editors-in-chief: Dr. Fang Fang obtained his Ph.D. in Cognitive and Biological Psychology at the University of Minnesota in 2006. He is a professor on brain and cognitive sciences and vice president of Peking University. His research seeks to understand the neural mechanisms of visual and cognitive processes by combining neuroimaging, electrophysiology, brain stimulation, psychophysics, computational modeling, and human genetics. Prof. Yue Guo’an is the distinguished professor of Zhejiang Normal University and was the president of Chinese Psychological Society (CPS) from 2012 to 2015. He has a profound study of the basic theories of psychology and has long been engaged in research in the fields of criminal psychology, military psychology and cyber psychology. Dr. Liu Jia obtained his Ph.D. in Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT in 2002. He is the chair professor of basic science at Tsinghua University and the head of the Psychology Department. He uses behavioral, genetic, brain imaging and artificial intelligence techniques to explore the nature of human intelligence from the perspective of visual intelligence. Dr. Mo Lei obtained his Ph.D. in Development and Educational Psychology from South China Normal University (SCNU) in 1988. He is the academic leader of the School of SCNU and was the president of Chinese Psychological Society (CPS) from 2011 to 2014. His major research area is linguistic psychology and the cognitive process of learning. Dr. Fu Xiaolan obtained her Ph.D. from the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1990. She served as the director of Institute of Psychology, CAS from 2010 to 2024 and was the president of Chinese Psychological Society (CPS) from 2016 to 2019. Her current research focuses on cognitive psychology, emotional psychology and psychology of lying.
