Exotic Plant Hunters

Monstera, Feigenblatt und Co. sind die stängligen Stars der sozialen Medien. Besitzer*innen bezeichnen sich als »Plantparents« oder »Plantfluencer«. Die Liebe zu Pflanzen signalisiert Achtsamkeit und einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit Konsum und Umwelt. Paradox an dieser Situation ist, dass der moderne »Urban Jungle« in einer kolonialen Tradition steht, welche durch Ausbeutung und Verschiffung tropische Pflanzen in die luxuriösen Stadtwohnungen der Bourgeoisie des 19. Jahrhunderts brachte. Exotische Pflanzen wurden zu dieser Zeit zum Repräsentationsobjekt von Reichtum und Wohlstand. Auf Fotografien, in welchen sich Personen, damals wie heute, mit der eigenen Sammlung tropischer Pflanzen inszenieren, wird ebenjene Parallele deutlich. The love of plants indicates mindfulness and a sustainable approach to consumption and the environment. The paradox of this situation is that the modern "urban jungle" is part of a colonial tradition that brought tropical plants into the luxurious city flats of the 19th century bourgeoisie through exploitation and shipping. At this time, exotic plants became an object of representation of wealth and prosperity. This parallel becomes visible in photographs in which people, then as now, stage themselves with their own collection of tropical plants.
