William Elliot Griffis (1843–1928) was an American orientalist, Congregational minister, lecturer, and prolific author, remembered most for his work related to Japan and his contributions to the field of folklore and fairy tales. Born in Philadelphia, Griffis was educated at Rutgers College, where he later returned as a professor of physics. His life took a pivotal turn when, in 1870, he went to Japan as part of the Iwakura Mission, which sought to modernize the country. During his time in Japan, he immersed himself in the culture and developed a deep appreciation for its history and folklore. After returning to the United States, Griffis continued his scholarly pursuits, authoring numerous books including 'The Mikado's Empire' and 'Japanese Fairy World' which helped introduce Japanese culture to a Western audience. His literary style was defined by its accessible prose and commitment to cultural education. In 'Dutch Fairy Tales for Young Folks'—a collection aimed at children—he delves into the rich tapestry of Dutch folklore, bringing to life the tales that have enchanted generations in the Netherlands. Through this and his other works, Griffis played a significant role in cross-cultural exchange, providing insights into the narratives that shape societies and fostering understanding between the East and the West. His contributions to the preservation and dissemination of traditional stories have made him a notable figure in the world of fairy tale literature.
