In the majority of cases childbirth is a joyous experience shared by the midwife. Tragically, however, there are occasions when events result in the loss of the pregnancy, and the midwife's role of providing holistic care and support can be extremely challenged. In each situation of loss - be it through spontaneous abortion, therapeutic termination or stillbirth - the midwife is a key member of the health care team. In the midst of an emotional crisis, she or he needs not only to provide as much individualized support and comfort as possible, but also to manage effectively the often highly confusing practicalities relating to issues such as registration, post-mortem examination requirements and funeral arrangements.
