This is a broad-ranging study on the 18th century, using a variety of contemporary literary texts as historical evidence to explain the dominant ideologies and attitudes of the time and considering the implications on policy of an increasingly news-conscious and articulate society. Evidence examined ranges beyond the strictly literary to include newspapers, pamphlets and prints and it demonstrates how the printed word does not merely reflect the changing ideologies of the time, but also shapes them.

Part 1 The first age of party - 1680-1720: the first age of party; poems on affairs of state; party ideology and society. Part 2 The classical age of the constitution 1720-1788: the classical age of the constitution; Jacobitism and patriotism; the emergence of the novel; literature and law and order. Part 3 The age of the French Revolution 1789-1820: the breakdown of the constitutional consensus; novels and the war of ideas; poems on the state of affairs.
