Political Tolerance, Culture and the Individual

This work holds that political tolerance and behaviour are the product of social and cultural interactions between individuals and culture rather than of inner psychological traits. It applies the sociological theories of John Dewey, Karl Mannheim and George H. Mead.

Dr. Moreno-Riano develops and tests a theory of political tolerance that encompasses cultural and social relations as well as standard explanations of political tolerance. While some of the theory's predictions do not work out, the research demonstrates conclusively that social relations and cultural values affect political toleration independently of demographic and psychological characteristics.
