It explores the city’s mission to embrace racial equity and the social empowerment of the poor and people of color. Students learn how the social climate of Oakland has evolved over time and the dynamics of multicultural politics in the urban sector.

Robert Stanley Oden is a professor in the Department of Political Science at California State University, Sacramento. He received his doctoral degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his master’s degree in community environmental management from the U.S. International University. Dr. Oden is a former Black Panther Party member and has been active in progressive community politics in San Diego, Berkeley, Oakland, and Sacramento. He is the president of the University of California Davis African and African American Alumni Association.
