Published in 1998, the aim of this book is to identify and explore key themes and issues around the realm of welfare practice in child and family social work - that is, family centre services and related community-based types of provision. The text addresses the impact and effectiveness of family centres in supporting children, families and communities. Emphasis is placed on community based supportive/preventive family services and those that provide a closed access and therapeutic service aimed at families referred by social workers where children are at risk of abuse. Throughout, the focus is on best practice exemplified by research findings of family centre impacts and outcomes in the UK, the USA and Hong Kong.

Andy Pithouse (PhD; AcSS) is a researcher in child and family services at Cardiff School of Social Sciences. He has published extensively in areas such as child advocacy, child protection, family service systems, and early intervention. Monit Cheung (MA, MSW, PhD, Ohio State) is professor and chair of the clinical practice concentration in the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. Cheung is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in family counseling, child and adolescent counseling, and incest survivor treatment. Cheung is on the Diocesan Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People at the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, an advisory board member of Catholic Charities and Asian American Family Services, and a board member for the End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation in Hong Kong.
