Making the transition from the military to higher education can be tricky. This clear guidebook will make the process easy, accessible, and understandable to any current or former member of the Army pursuing higher education while on active-duty or just leaving the service.
Today’s soldiers are highly motivated to serve, but face numerous challenges, especially considering the sacrifices they have made over the past decade of war. As the service branches face budget cuts and draw downs, soldiers need to be aware of the resources and options available to help make them more competitive for promotion or more credible for potential civilian-sector employers. From the Army to College: Transitioning from the Service to Higher Education fulfills this need by serving as a long-term reference manual that will support soldiers throughout their higher education or vocational pursuits and assist with navigating the available funding resources. Aspiring civilians looking to join the Army, soldiers already on active duty, or those transitioning into the civilian sector will gain invaluable information to help them properly prepare, plan, and perform the tasks necessary for a successful transition into the world of education. If a soldier’s goal is to expand his or her credentials through education or training, this book is the definitive field manual.

Jillian Ventrone is a higher education counselor for service members aboard a federal installation, working with Marines and their families to help them transition to education or to other professions. She is the go-to expert for professional advice for service members and dependents who want to successfully transition into higher education. She writes for the base Education Newsletter monthly and has articles published in the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium publication and the Military Press Magazine. Paul Karczewski has lived in Army communities for the majority of his life. After growing up the son of an Army career NCO he chose to give back to the same community that had helped shape the person he is today. He jumped at the opportunity to work with service members in a variety of downrange locations as an Education Counselor and instantly knew he wanted to continue to serve soldiers in this capacity. Once coming back home he now guides transitioning service members in navigating the often complex and confusing world of higher education.
