This volume explores the social, historical and cultural dimensions of medicine, and promotes a multifaceted approach towards health, illness, healthcare and body. The articles gathered here focus on various issues relevant to medical knowledge, public health policies, and the experiences of being ill and of caring for those who are ill. Professor Andrzej Kapusta (dr hab.) is the Chair of the Cultural Anthropology Department in the Institute of Philosophy at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland. He specialises in cognitive sciences and social communication, the anthropology of medicine, philosophical psychopathology, and the analysis of different dimensions of mental health and concepts of contemporary psychiatry and psychology. Professor Kapusta is the author of two books: Filozofia ekstremalna. Wokół myśli krytycznej Michela Foucaulta [Extremal Philosophy: Michel Foucault’s Critical Thinking] and Szaleństwo i metoda: granice rozumienia w filozofii i psychiatrii [Madness and Method. The Limits of Understanding in Philosophy and Psychiatry]. He is also the author of over thirty articles on philosophy of psychiatry, including “Can Mental Illness be Naturalised?” in Beyond Description: Naturalism and Normativity (2010) and “Karl Jaspers’ Psychopathology and Contemporary Psychiatry” in Advances in Psychiatry and Neurology (2014), among others.Michal Lytovka is a PhD student at the Cultural Anthropology Department at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland. He holds an MA degree in Physiotherapy and a postgraduate qualification as Physician Associate. He is interested in history and philosophy of medicine, embodied theories, and the sociology of knowledge, and his PhD work focuses on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
