The book recounts the significant events and eras including Habsburg rule, Turkish invasions, the periods of religious strife and the Napoleonic war, but concentrates on the cultural blossoming at the beginning of this century. The book examines the work of painters such as Schiele, Kokoschka and Klimt, architects such as Loos and Wagner, composers such as Mahler and Schoenberg and that of the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. But above all it attempts to give an impression of the milieu and surroundings in which these people worked and of the experience of living at a time of such prodigious and controversial creation.
