Part of a series on important themes and episodes in European history since the 16th century, this study aims to provide a rounded analysis of what Stalinism means and suggests the line of analysis to be pursued to comprehend fully the origins of this system.

This book analyses Stalinism in its varied dimensions, breaking down some of the stereotypes which have abounded in our understanding of this phenomenon. As well as bringing rigour and consistency to our understanding of the meaning of Stalinism, it tackles the central question of the origins of this system. In doing so it surveys the broad body of writing on this topic, and suggest that many existing explanations are flawed.
