A selection of rarely seen photographs.
Germany in the Great War - Eastern Advance, Naval Warfare and the Home Front is the second in a two-part visual series immortalising - in pictorial form - the German, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian struggle for ascendancy, 1914. From the 'somewhat reluctantly approved [...] mobilisation' of Russian personnel, to the German 'Scramble for Africa' and Ottoman demur to the south, Germany in the Great War - Eastern Advance manifests the experience of daily life on those 'forgotten' fronts. Promoting 'German' rule, (including Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman hegemony), each successive chapter features an introductory narrative and subsequent timeline, illustrating in photographs the extent, decline and advance of the Central Powers and its myriad branches of service, to the east, far east, south, in Africa and at sea. This book is a valuable historiographical and visual archive of the German perspective of 'the great seminal catastrophe' and helpfully includes a chronology of events, mapping campaigns, incursions, major and minor events on all fronts during the first year of the war.Accompanying this, is a wealth of fully captioned photographs, many from private collections and promotional texts, which have never been published or seen in this country before: some 500 photographs in all.
