How did Virginia become the amazing state that it is today you may wonder? Virginia's Remarkable Women: Daughters, Wives, Sisters, and Mothers Who Shaped History recognizes the women who shaped the Old Dominion. The lives of female teachers, writers, entrepreneurs, and artists from across the state are illuminated through short biographies.

Discover fifteen extraordinary women from Virginia's past, including Pocahontas, Martha Washington, Dolley Madison, travel writer Anne Newport Royall, pioneering banker Maggie Lena Walker, Civil War spies Belle Boyd and Elizabeth Van Lew, and poet Anne Spencer.

A native Virginian and currently a freelance writer, Emilee Hines taught history, English, and creative writing for thirty-two years. A historian by training, she is a graduate of Lynchburg College and has a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is author of seven volumes of Old Virginia Houses, over 250 published articles and short stories, and Globe Pequot's It Happened in Virginia and Speaking Ill of the Dead: Jerks in Washington, DC History. She lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
