Empirically-informed practice is increasingly important as managed health care environments demand accountability in mental health and health care services. In this comprehensive text, Dr. Corcoran makes implementing evidence-based clinical practice easy. She reviews the most common problem areas social workers encounter. Each chapter reviews of the family treatment outcome literature, addresses different theoretical orientations, summarizes the most current clinical research studies, and provides information on standardized, self-report instruments and their validity. The topics include: child physical abuse and neglect, ADHD, sexual abuse, eating disorders, schizophrenia, caregiving of the elderly, and more.
Jacqueline Corcoran, PhD, has been assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work since 1996 and since 1997 has been codirector of the Community Service Clinic at the School of Social Work, where she supervises and trains graduate students to provide free and sliding-scale services to low-income members of the community. Dr. Corcoran teaches in the direct practice concentration with courses such as Direct Practice Methods, Theories for Direct Practice Intervention, Family Therapy, Treatment of the Child and Adolescent, and Behavior Therapy. Dr. Corcoran has published numerous journal articles in the areas of family therapy, solution-focused therapy, crisis intervention, and adolescent pregnancy. Her research involves the efficacy of solution-focused therapy with behavior-disordered children and their families and crisis intervention responses to domestic violence. Prior to completing her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996, Dr. Corcoran worked in the following practice arenas: treatment of juvenile offenders, home health care, university counseling, outpatient community clinic, and child abuse victim services.
