Bergman was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century, with his charge continuing to the present because of the relentless honesty with which he confronted our shared disenchantment. While there is no direct connection between Bergman and Weber, similarities can be traced back to their shared Protestantism, their vision of the contemporary human condition.
By discussing Bergman, the literature surrounding him and his films - notably those of the 'so-called' Faith Trilogy (Winter Light, Through a Glass Darkly and The Silence) - the author opens up new territories of using film as a means of understanding themes in religious and sociological theory. This is an original reading of Bergman in order to 'speak' to him in a way which will appeal to readers, irrespective of the conventional academic divisions of labour and, indeed, outside of academia itself.
