The 50th anniversary souvenir edition of this map depicts the south-east of England and the Normandy coast as they were 50 years ago. Drawn in the cartographic style of 1944 it illustrates the distribution of Allied forces in England prior to the invasion and the naval manoeuvres during the operation code-named "Operation Neptune". The map also shows the landing zones in Normandy, indicating both the Allied divisions that captured the beaches and the German positions located there. Around the main map are photographs, illustrations and text comprising an inset map showing Europe under the Axis; photographs and potted biographies of General Eisenhower, Admiral Sir Bertram Home Ramsay and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel; action photographs of the actual landings; maps illustrating how the invasion beach was "softened up" by bombing and sabotage; the progress of the battle following the D-Day landings from 6 June to the end of August; the present-day locations of cemeteries, monuments and museums; countdown to D-Day; and a timetable which encapsulates the main events from Dunkirk to D-Day.
