As in many other European countries, the sustainability of the long-term care system is a key issue in the Dutch policy debate. In order to shed light on this issue this book compares the way elderly persons are supported in sixteen European countries. Based on the latest SHARE data it provides an assessment of long-term care institutions, individual care needs and their underlying risk factors, the availability of network care, and the paid and nonpaid care people actually receive.

Isolde Woittiez studied econometrics in Rotterdam and received her PhD from Tilburg University on female labor supply. She has been a researcher in the Institute for Social Research since 1999. Her research interests are modelling behavior, elderly care, and care for people with intellectual disabilities. Evelien Eggink has been a researcher in the Institute for Social Research since 1994. Her research interests are elderly care and productivity analysis. Lisa Putman is a researcher in the Institute for Social Research. Her research interests are youth and elderly care.
