Explains how the Sikh separatist movement for Khalistan developed in the Punjab and why it turned violent. In a style which is narrative, the author shows how internal power blocks within Sikhism shaped an exclusionary Sikh identity over the past 300 years. The political economy perspective of the book explains how largely the interests of the Sikh capitalist farmers have shaped post-independence Sikh politics. In order to establish their complete hegemony over the home market of Punjab, Sikh landlords clashed openly with Hindu traders and commercial/industrial monopolies that resulted in the 'Punjab crisis'.
