This is a study of the attempt by the People's Republic of China to remove perceived nuclear threat and to maximize its foreign policy interests, the issue of Taiwan in particular. The study is analogized from the playing of the board-game of Chinese Checkers, because the dynamics of the Chinese-U.S.-Soviet interactions at both the strategic and tactical levels can be described, explicated, and interpreted from its rules, principles, and structures (including the game-board itself and overall power capabilities of each player). Thus, for example, power, exchange, and the factor of distance are involved, when and where appropriate.
The Author: A graduate of Rutgers University (New Brunswick campus), Peter K.H. Yu received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Politics from New York University. Currently he is Associate Professor of International Relations at the Sun Yat-sen Institute of National Sun Yatsen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the Republic of China.
Contents: After having constructed a strategic model of Chinese Checkers, three case studies (qua games) are examined, deductively and inductively. The first game began in 1964, the second game in 1969, and the third game in 1979. A comparison of other alter- native models dealing with the strategic triad is made in the last chapter.
