From her first piano recital at age three until circumstances prevented her further concertizing, Maria Curcio performed with such great musicians as Carlo Maria Giulini, Pierre Monteux, Joseph Krips, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Szymon Goldberg. Literally Schnabel's last student, she now devotes her full time to teaching. Her experience and rich legacy make her one of the most important piano teachers of this century. This book explains how she translates the inspiration and musical ideas behind a masterpiece into their realization in sound.

The Author: Douglas Ashley is an honors graduate from Northwestern University where he won first prize in piano. He also has a Ph.D. from Northwestern with a dissertation on The Role of the Piano in Schumann's Songs. In addition he has the piano certificate from the Conservatory of Vienna, having studied with Viola Thern and Paul Badura-Skoda. He also studied intensively with Maria Curcio. He has compiled six volumes of twentieth century piano music. A member of the faculty at the University of Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Ashley performs regularly in the U.S. and Europe.

Contents: This book contains sections on the responsibility of teaching, how to becomes a performer, and advice about competitions and careers for pianists. There are also many notes taken directly from Maria Curcio's masterclasses. There are also comments by Jose Feghali and Barry Douglas, two of her former students.
