In recent years, the IUPAC Commission on Macromolecular Nomenclature has developed sets of definitions for many of the basic terms which deal with polymer molecules, assemblies of polymer molecules, polymer solutions and polymer crystals. The Commission continues to work to develop definitions of terms relating to polymer melts and solids, and polymerization reactions. The Commission is also extending existing nomenclature to more complicated cases, such as irregular polymers, cross-linked polymers, double-strand polymers, interpenetrating networks, and multicomponent polymer systems. This compendium is a compilation of the current IUPAC recommendations on macromolecular nomenclature which provides a)definitions of terms relating to polymers and b)rules for naming polymers, based on structure and source. The Compendium also includes an introduction to macromolecular nomenclature and a bibliography of bipolymer-related nomenclature recommendations. The IUPAC-approved terminology and nomenclature, by providing standardized descriptions of the materials and processes for polymer science and technology, is intended to improve communication in the scientific community.
