Rex Conway's Midland steam journey
Join Rex Conway on a remarkable steam-hauled journey on the Midland region during the golden age of steam, with many diversions along the way. There are really three journeys in this book. Travelling first from Bristol Temple Meads we take in scenes as diverse as Gloucester, the Lickey Bank, Birmingham New Street and Water Orton, before heading into the heartland of the Midland region - Derby. We then venture through the Derbyshire Dales on to Buxton, Clay Cross, Chesterfield and Sheffield, before commencing the second journey from St Pancras. We head northwards again through the outskirts of London to Bedford, Kettering, Leicester, Toton and Leeds, before joining the Settle-Carlisle line. Back in the south again, we start the final journey from Euston and take in Camden, Willesden, Kings Langley, Rugby, Lichfield and Crewe before steaming on to North Wales and Manchester.
Through this selection of over 250 outstanding photographs we see a plethora of engines - including 'Duchesses', 'Jubilees', 'Royal Scots' and 'Patriots' - a multitude of stations, engine sheds, tunnels and halts. This is a must-read for all railway enthusiasts, and gives us another tantalising glimpse of the previously unseen images from Rex's 65,000-strong archive.
