Ed McKnew has been involved in the marine industry since the mid-1970s, first as a yacht broker and later as the owner of several brokerage firms in Michigan and Texas. He co-founded the PowerBoat Guide in 1988 and issued its first edition that year. He still publishes the brokers edition of the PowerBoat Guide, which covers inboard powerboats of 27 feet and longer, as well as the TrailerBoat Guide, covering boats 18 to 27 feet long.
