Michael O'Toole was born in Hospital, Co Limerick and educated at the Polytechnic of Central London and Trinity College, Dublin. He worked in the Leinster Leader, the Limerick Leader, the Evening Herald and as an aviation correspondent for the Irish Press group, during which time he learned to fly. He wrote and broadcast widely on aviation matters up to his death in 2000.
