Written by a man who is both a marathon runner and sportswriter, this carefully researched book conjures up fifty of the greatest races from the history of the modern marathon. Author, William Cockerell, details the great 'classics' including the first Olympic marathon in Athens 1896 and the famous "duel in the sun" between Alberto Salazar and Dick Beardsley at the 1982 Boston Marathon, as well as lesser known gems from the Bostons and Londons of recent years. He describes the races themselves along with the stories of the extraordinary athletes that lay behind them. By drawing on extensive research and interviews with some of the world's finest marathon runners, past and present, William Cockerell has written a book that will be cherished by every sports lover.
William Cockerell is the club captain and secretary of the London based Belgrave Harriers - one of Britain's most successful athletics clubs. He is a keen distance runner and over the last ten years has taken part in fourteen marathons across the UK and America, placing in the top forty of the London Marathon. His experience in both racing and training has brought him into contact with some of the greatest long distance runners of recent times. William is the great-grandson of the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and the son of the distinguished BBC documentary-maker Michael Cockerill and he was educated at Eaton College and Boston College. William has worked as a journalist for the UK news magazine The Week, as a football columnist and is now a freelance sportswriter.
