Witty and richly illustrated take on the best moments in the history of the world's third biggest sporting event
WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE is an illustrated guide to the best moments in the history of the world's third biggest sporting event. (The worldwide audience for the 2002 Ryder Cup was over one billion.) Based on an article written for GOLF PUNK magazine, the text takes a modern and witty approach to the biennial (and not always entirely friendly) golf tournament that pits America against the combined strength of the European nations; it will also feature contributions from the players involved. The evocative photographs come from one of the foremost archives of golf images. The moments will include some well known - the infamous American green 'invasion' at Brookline in 1999; Jack Nicklaus's 1969 concession of a 2-foot putt to Britain's Tony Jacklin, resulting in the first drawn Cup - and some less so: Ken Still and Lee Trevino v. Maurice Bembridge and Bernard Gallacher in one of the most bad-tempered matches ever, and the time Nick Faldo apparently decided to ignore his rookie playing partner. The book also lists all the players and results since the first competition in 1927 to ensure that it is as informative as it is entertaining.
