A village in the foothills of Cyprus's Troodos Mountains gives Libby Rowan-Moorhouse her view of a small world of warmth, friendship and all the amusing frustrations experienced by a foreigner settling into an ancient culture. Mixes travel writing with a very personal view of Cyprus, its history, culture and people. Author born in Australia.
Written partly in diary form and supplemented by letters home, In the Land of Aphrodite tells of the joys and vicissitudes of Libby Rowan-Moorhouse's new and very different life when she and her husband move to Cyprus. Written in a clear, fluid style, In the Land of Aphrodite describes the limitless hospitality and communal life in a Cypriot village. Putting her experiences in context, Libby Rowan-Moorhouse outlines the history of Cyprus and its troubles. She gives vivid descriptions of the scenery and wildlife and provides some delightful illustrations. It all adds up to a lively entertaining read about an enchanting but unsettled place.

Libby Rowan-Moorhouse married in England and grew interested in human rights, first with the plight of Tibetan refugees. She became a Council Member of The Tibet Society in London and visited Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal in 1974 to report on their needs. A proud moment was being invited to a small private lunch given by H.H, The Dalai Lama in 1986 in Strasbourg. After living in South Africa and Zimbabwe, she became interested in the Fistula Hospital for women, Ethiopia. The author has written numerous magazine articles and this is her first book. She has a son and daughter and seven grandchildren and now lives in East Sussex.
