Pocket Guide to Stars and Planets is a practical guide to understanding the night sky and observing the heavenly bodies. Chapters help the reader to identify different types of stars and galaxies, the planets and satellites of our solar system, as well as comets and meteorites, offering clear and concise definitions of important terms and concepts. There are guidelines for the use of binoculars and telescopes, and tips on setting up a backyard observatory. The book includes comprehensive seasonal night-sky charts for the northern and southern hemispheres, as well as detailed descriptions of the 50 most interesting objects in the night sky - each accompanied by a localized star chart - with detailed instructions on how and when to view them.

Ian Morison is a radio astronomer at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, where he was a designer of the 217 Merlin array, and has coordinated the Project Phoenix Seti Observations using the Lovell radio telescope. He is a council member and past president of the Society for Popular Astronomy (UK). Ian contributes articles and reviews for New Scientist and Astronomy Now and produces a monthly sky guide on the Observatory's website. He teaches astronomy and cosmology at the University of Manchester. Dr Margaret J Penston, MBE, is Vice President of the Royal Astronomical Society, and President of the Society for Popular Astronomy in the UK. She obtained her BSc Hons Physics (II) from Edinburgh University, and her MSc and doctorate from Sussex University. From 1963 to 1998, Dr Penston worked at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. From 1998 to 2001, she was Schools Officer for Astronomy and Space Science with the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. Margaret Penston was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List, December 2001. Consultant Dr Robin M Catchpole worked for the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1962 until 1998, and is now the Senior Astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. He has authored and co-authored over 100 research papers and articles and used telescopes around the world, including the Hubble Space Telescope.
