This book delves into the anthropogenic activities responsible for environmental hazards, their compensation, and potential mitigation strategies. It sheds light on the major contributors to the climate change issues aggravated by non-sustainable practices for the overexploitation of natural resources. Critical topics such as high emissions in primary mining, the recovery of energy-critical metals by urban mining, solid waste management, and forest conservation are explored, offering insights into the urgent challenges we face.

Amidst the rapid demand for resources and the expansion of human habitats, the book emphasizes the need for new approaches to natural resource management and introspection of our actions. Experts in the field discuss existing anthropogenic environmental hazards in detail, alongside environmental compensation, and effective mitigation approaches.

The book begins with a chapter dedicated to risk assessment in primary mining activities for precious metals, proposing potential routes for mitigation. Chapter 2 focuses on assessing and mitigating the environmental footprints of energy-critical metals used in permanent magnets. In Chapter 3, a case study examines sustainable resource utilization through end-of-life room air conditioner recycling. Additional chapters provide critical insights into:

  • The environmental impacts of e-waste and government policies for responsible management
  • Hazards associated with industrial effluents and corresponding mitigation strategies
  • The role of roadside plants in phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution
  • Sustainable utilization of anthropogenic coal fly ash through mechanical and chemical activation
  • Environmental damages resulting from the mismanagement of municipal solid waste
  • Environmental problems and remediation strategies for anthropogenic biomass waste
  • Challenges in sustainable municipal solid waste management and suggestions for environmental risk mitigation

The book concludes with a chapter discussing collaborative governance and non-monetary compensation mechanisms for sustainable forest management. Given its breadth, this book serves as an indispensable resource for researchers, policymakers, and environmental professionals seeking sustainable approaches to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

Dr. Pankaj Pathak is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering at SRM University, AP, India. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Environmental Geotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. Her area of domain includes solid and hazardous waste management, and waste to energy, and has a keen interest in sustainable green energy resources. She has published peer-reviewed articles in high-impact international journals and books with Springer, CRC etc.

Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Srivastava is an academician and industrial researcher in the areas of hydrometallurgy, resource management, and reaction thermodynamics. He earned his Ph.D. in 2017 from the University of Science and Technology (South Korea) in the major of Resources Recycling, and currently he is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Duy Tan University (Da Nang) and a Senior Researcher at the Center of Advanced Chemistry, Institute of Research and Development (Da Nang) in Vietnam. Besides this, he has remained associated with ATTERO Recycling (India), Tae-Hyung Recycling (South Korea), Rubamin Limited (India), and CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (India) in various capacities. His interdisciplinary research interests include solid & industrial waste management, urban mining, and bio- and hydro-metallurgical exploitation of energy-critical elements for clean and alternative energy production. He has five patents, and published about 50 research articles in high-impact journals, some of them are among highly cited articles.

Dr. Sadia Ilyas is a Brain Pool Scientist at the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and a Professor (Research) in the Department of Earth Resources and Environmental Engineering at Hanyang University (Seoul), South Korea. She earned her Ph.D. in 2011 with doctoral research at the University of  Agriculture Faisalabad focused on the metals-to-microbe interactions in the geo-environment and their application in the sustainable exploitation of valuable metals from the burgeoning legacy of the digital world (i.e., electronic waste). Dr. Ilyas has 10+ years of post-Ph.D. experience in both teaching and research in the inter-disciplinary areas of bio- and hydro-metallurgy, applied, inorganic, and environmental chemistry, sustainable (solid & industrial) waste management, extraction of critical raw minerals, etc. During her career, she also had the opportunity to work in different countries with well- known institutions worldwide, like Hanyang University-Seoul, Jeonbuk National University-Jeonju and KIGAM-Daejeon in South Korea, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and the GC University of Faisalabad in Pakistan, and the Wuhan Institute of Technology in China. She has six patents, published about 100 research articles in high-impact journals, including many of them are highly cited, and wrote a number of book chapters and edited books.
