Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu in Jerusalem, was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian and hagiographer of priestly and royal ancestry who recorded Jewish history with special emphasis on the first-century CE and the First Jewish–Roman War which resulted in the Destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in the year 70 CE. Josephus's most important works include 'The Jewish War' (c. 75) and 'Antiquities of the Jews' (c. 94). Although the title 'The History of the Jewish People' is not one of his formally recognized works, the contents likely correspond to material found within his 'Antiquities'. In his writings, Josephus provides a detailed account of the history of the Jewish people from Creation to the start of the great revolt against Rome. His historical works are invaluable secondary sources for understanding the context of the Second Temple Period, early Christianity, and the dynamics of the time. Josephus is known not only for his comprehensive narrative style but also for his intricate descriptions of the Jewish society, religious practices, and influence of Hellenism. Despite criticism over his loyalty to Rome—stemming from his role as a commander in Galilee during the revolt and later as a Roman citizen—his accounts are lauded for their scope and detail.
