R. M. Ballantyne (1825–1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction who penned over 100 books. Born Robert Michael Ballantyne in Edinburgh, he was part of a famous family of printers and publishers. At the age of 16, he went to Canada and worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, where he gathered material for his future writings.
