Herbert Allen Giles (1845–1935) was a distinguished British diplomat, sinologist, and scholar who made significant contributions to the Western understanding of Chinese language and civilization. Born on December 8, 1845, Giles spent most of his professional life in the diplomatic service in China, which provided him with an intimate knowledge of the country's culture and society. Giles is perhaps best known for his role in developing the Wade-Giles system of romanization for Mandarin Chinese, which, prior to the adoption of Pinyin, was the most widely used system in the English-speaking world.
