The Last Sunset in the West by Natalie Sanders is the story of Britain’s only native pod of orcas, which are heading rapidly towards extinction. This captivating account takes the reader deep into the history of our relations with these beautiful and sentient creatures
Britain's west coast is home to only one pod of orca, and they're heading rapidly towards extinction.

In 2014, Dr Natalie Sanders joined the crew of the HV Silurian to seek out the West Coast Community of Orca and study them before we lose them forever. In The Last Sunset in the West, she discusses them as individuals while also exploring the many issues surrounding their lives.

Her captivating account takes the reader from the Western Isles of Scotland to Vancouver Island and around the world, deep into the history of our relations with these beautiful and sentient creatures.

After completing her PhD in marine biology, Natalie Sanders worked as a marine consultant and has authored several peer-reviewed publications, scientific reports, a book chapter on marine protected areas and blog articles for various marine conservation organisations. Passionate about supporting charities that work to protect our marine life, she has collaborated with the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and charities in British Columbia. She lives in the southwest of England with her husband and two children. FOREWORD AUTHOR BIOG Erich Hoyt has spent much of his life on or near the sea, working with whales and dolphins and marine conservation. An award-winning author, he has written or co-written more than 25 books and hundreds of magazine articles on whales, dolphins, as well as ants, insects, wild plants and other subjects. In 2013, Erich won the European Cetacean Society’s Mandy McMath Conservation Prize for his body of work.
