This manual offers a step-by-step guide to the art of training, exercising and suppling horses from the ground, by a leading exponent of the art. Starting with training foals and young horses, the author works through to perfecting in-hand piaffe and passage, explaining how to master each stage on the way.
Lungeing and Long-Reining, published in association with The British Horse Society, is a step-by-step guide to training, exercising and suppling horses from the ground, written by Britain's leading exponent of the art.

The book begins with advice on handling untrained youngsters and works through a logical training progression, culminating in advanced dressage movements.

Straightforward guidance is given on:

Training foals and young horses
Lungeing equipment and technique
Introducing long-reins and early lateral work
Backing and riding young horses
Lungeing over poles and fences
Advanced long-reining; including cantering, rein-back, shoulder-in, travers, half pirouettes, half-pass, renvers, canter half-pass, canter pirouettes and tempi flying changes.

Piaffe and passage Olympic dressage rider and trainer Jennie Loriston-Clarke has broken and schooled countless dressage and jumping horses, and initially uses lungeing and long-reining to establish the horse's basic education and create mutual respect between horse and handler. The knowledge she has gained over the years while working with novices and older 'difficult' horses sent for retraining, is distilled in this book into simple instructions, so that others can avoid making costly mistakes when training their horses.

The goal throughout is to produce a horse that is confident, keen and happy in his work — which should be the aim of every trainer.

Illustrated with specially commissioned sequence photographs, this book will prove particularly valuable in the early training of young horses, as well as in improving or retraining older horses, and refining dressage movements in advance horses.

Jennie Loriston-Clarke MBE FBHS is one of Britain's leading dressage riders and trainers. She has represented Great Britain in four Olympic Games: Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976) with Kadett, Los Angeles (1984) with Prince Consort, and Seoul (1988) with Dutch Gold (14th). She also won the World Bronze medal in 1978 and was sixth in the Alternative Olympics in 1980, riding Dutch Courage, whom she trained from a three-year old. Jennie has enjoyed a long and successful career with horses, having bred and shown prize-winning ponies, hacks and hunters, as well as having ridden show-jumpers, point-to-pointers and eventers before specialising in dressage.Inspired by the long-reining displays given by the Spanish Riding School, Jennie decided to train her retired Grand Prix stallion, Dutch Courage, to perform advanced movements without a rider. This he did with such success that later she also trained Dutch Gold, and Jennie soon found herself in great demand for the impressive demonstrations these two horses could give. Jennie is a Fellow of the British Horse Society, holds the National Pony Society Diploma and is an examiner for both societies. She is a well-known judge of show horses, a List 1 dressage judge and a highly respected trainer. In 1978 she was awarded an MBE for her services to British equestrianism and in 2001 she was awarded not only the Animal Health Trust's Special Award (a rarity) but also was made a member of the Worshipful Company of Farriers and the Worshipful Company of Saddlers for her dedication to the world of horses and equestrianism. In 2006 Jennie was the first recipient of the Queen's Award for Services to Equestrianism an award which she particularly treasures. In 2007 Jennie was elected a Chairperson of British Dressage. A role which she has taken on with great enthusiasm as it will give her further opportunities to promote British Riders and British Horses and British Breeding and in 2013, Jennie was asked to be President of British Dressage as well as being nominated to Chairperson of Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain.
