Known in Welsh as Ynys Môn, Anglesey is the largest island in Wales and the second most populous island in Britain. It includes other smaller islands, principally Holy Island (Ynys Gybi) to the northwest. The beauty of its scenery and richness of its wildlife attract many today, but Anglesey’s industries have played a key role in the history of the island, including copper which has been mined since the Bronze Age, and its location on important transport routes has also shaped it, with Thomas Telford’s completion of the coaching road from London to Holyhead, the port for Ireland, with his suspension bridge and Robert Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge carrying the railway across the Menai Strait.
