Still I See Hope
What is right and true for one person is not necessarily right and true for another. This is as true with IC as it is in life. We are not all the same and we do not all find comfort, hope and answers in the same areas no matter what illness, or other life event, we may experience. Obviously this book contains my perspective of what Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is all about and how to treat it successfully. As I’ve always said, please don’t just listen to me. Read more about what I'm saying elsewhere and speak to other IC patients to learn about their experiences. Most importantly, please do what feels right to you because it is, after all, your body. The majority of mistakes I made as I was healing were made when I listened to other people's advice over what felt right to me. When it comes to healing from IC, due to the incredible amount of differences among us, it is even more important to listen to your gut instincts and to what your body is telling you. In fact, learning how to listen to your body and to your specific individual symptoms is an integral part of my healing approach. I’ve been referring to this as an individualized, holistic, alternative approach for several years now and though the name is far too long, it remains accurate.
I used to talk about writing a pamphlet on how to heal from IC on a shoestring budget because so many IC patients (I was one of them) can’t work when they’re sick and it’s hard to be able to afford a lot of different alternative treatments that are not covered by insurance. Well, this is not a pamphlet, but most of what I’m about to share with you is inexpensive and some of it is even free. What is in this book is what I would do if my IC ever came back. It is what I would advise someone I love to do if they ever had the misfortune of having IC.
Mine is a gentle approach to healing that takes into account our individual differences while addressing our most marked commonalities as IC patients. Healing from IC does not have to be harsh, invasive, painful and stressful. My approach is literally the opposite of all that.
Since my last book came out over a decade ago, I have watched the development of a brand new "medical condition" created by the pharmaceutical industry called overactive bladder (OB). (There are many conditions created to sell drugs. It does not mean the person doesn't have symptoms.) I have watched the continued censorship and suppression of information within the IC community. I have watched as treatments are promoted and widely prescribed even after being proven to be ineffective. And I have watched the alternative medicine community jump into the fray and also ineffectively treat IC. Though I have felt great hope for IC patients over recent years as information about alternative treatments have become more readily available and more widely accepted, I have also experienced great sadness and frustration as I've watched the average age of IC patients drop, the amount of IC patients rise, and the mistreatment of IC patients continue.
More and more IC patients are pursuing a natural and holistic approach to healing IC. This book is especially for you. Many of you have asked me similar questions over the years and I hope to offer guidance in those areas. Literally thousands of IC patients have contacted me for help in determining their individual IC situation so I know that many of you feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do. My intention is to empower you further with more information so that you can move forward with more confidence and hopefully less fear. I will be addressing some of the most common questions I receive and discussing some things I've never written about before.
If I didn’t have something to say that I thought might be helpful to those who are still suffering then I definitely would not be writing again. In fact, until very recently I had no intention of revising and expanding this book. I wanted to continue to move on with my life and, to be honest; I really didn’t want to think about IC anymore (as I’m sure you can understand). However, I also knew that I had learned a lot more over the past several years that I believed could be helpful to your healing. So, to be honest, I found it difficult to just walk away without sharing what I’d learned.
Speaking of honesty, I must tell you, that it makes me a bit nervous to share some of what I’m about to share with you. I wasn’t sure I really wanted to write about this or have those who have known me personally learn what I’m about to share. This is not my idea of fun nor do I find it cathartic to share my experiences. So then, why am I doing this? Why DO I write books about a bladder disease when I am just a regular person? Well, as lame as it might sound to some, the simple truth is that I do this to help those who are suffering. I write because I wish someone had shared these things in a book before I had gotten sick. Also, when you go through an extraordinarily difficult life experience, what can you do but make lemonade out of your lemons, right? Empathic by nature, this book is part of my lemonade.
Who am I and how do I know what I know? I do not have a medical background and I never really planned to write books. In fact, I started out in the music business before studying to become a therapist. The closest I came to "medicine" was as a volunteer child life worker at University Rainbow Babies & Children Hospital where I worked with terminally ill children all through high school. After graduating from Kenyon College in 1985, I worked for Capital and EMI Records and also managed a large recording studio. In 1989, I graduated with a master's degree from CWRU with specific training in the area of domestic violence. I counseled abused women and children, as well as their abusive partners. I planned to get a PhD in Clinical Psychology. I did not plan to get IC.
Experts often read and take classes, studying information amassed from the many who have had the actual experience, but typically lack the experience themselves. When it comes to IC, not only have I had the experience of healing from a severe case, but I also worked as a co-leader of a large online support group for many years. This is what initially afforded me the opportunity to study hundreds, and ultimately thousands, of others who also had it. A huge advantage I’ve had over urologists is that I never spoke on the phone to an IC patient with a waiting room full of other patients. I had the time to listen. I got to hear the truth of their experiences with different treatments, their entire IC story, and even to the "weird" extra symptoms so many of us experience but rarely have time to share with our doctor. In twenty years of speaking to those with IC, I also never had to charge money. (I was blessed that my husband had a job that afforded me the opportunity not to need an income.) So again, I was in a unique position to be able to speak with anyone and everyone. It didn’t matter what type of insurance someone had or if they could afford help.
Out of my own desperation to get well, I researched heavily, studying other people’s experiences, comparing and contrasting them with each other and to my own. Once I wrote my first book, I began to hear from IC patients from all around the world. I also learned from healers who initially worked on my behalf, but ultimately helped me to help others. I’ve attended many online seminars and read mounds of research in the areas of herbs, essential oils, alternative, natural, and energy medicine. This revised and expanded version of my second book Along the Healing Path is the culmination of all that I’ve learned and come to understand about IC and its related conditions.
My books have always been about hope and empowerment. This updated edition is certainly no different. I’ve always cared very much for you to know that there is hope for you to heal (not only because it is true, which it is), but because I know how I felt when I was told there was no hope for me. When someone tells you that you can never get better (which is what most all of us were told), when someone tells you that you have to learn to live with something that is painful and/or ruins most aspects of your life, well, it’s very harsh as you know. Here is what I want to tell you, what I would tell you if I were talking to you on the phone or sitting with you in person. Don’t believe them. It can actually inhibit your healing if you believe them. Whether you have heard about the universal law of attraction or not, you know that if you believe you can’t heal it will likely affect whether or not you actually heal. It will affect how you treat yourself, your bladder, and your body. It will both directly and indirectly affect your healing. So, please don’t believe them. Also, (did I mention this already?) it isn’t true. There really is hope. You really can heal from IC.
With all the options now available, I want you to know that still, I see hope. No matter what you have been through with your IC up to this point, there are things you can do to help your body and bladder to heal. In fact, I see more hope for you to heal now than I even did years ago. I see hope for IC patients within alternative medicine’s new understanding of the microbiome, the endocannabinoid system, the role of hidden infections in chronic illness, and how to rebalance hormones naturally. I see hope for IC patients within the mounds of evidence that water molecules hold memory, sound frequencies can provide healing, and that the releasing of negative emotions can help our body find balance physically. All of...
