F1 stock car racing has been one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport in Britain since 1954. Its popularity surged in the 1960s and continued - despite economic upheavals sweeping the country - through the 1970s and into the 1980s. HEAVY METAL tells the story of the leading drivers of that era and their quest to become world champion.
F1 stock car drivers compete in one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport in Britain. Racing in powerful self-built, heavily-armoured, single-seater racing cars on quarter-mile oval tracks, F1 stock car racing is a full-contact sport. During a history that covers eight decades, the sport is often regarded as British motor racing's best-kept secret. Its popularity peaked in the 1970s, with more than 140 meetings in a season that stretched from March until November. HEAVY METAL tells the story of some of the leading stars of the sport during this golden era - notably Stuart Smith, Doug Cronshaw and Willie Harrison. Smith would develop into the man to beat and the ultimate showman, while his life-long friend Cronshaw was an unassuming hero with a huge and loyal northern fan base. Harrison, a veteran who raced through four decades, competed at the highest level despite debilitating injuries suffered as a young child. These men featured in many of the sport's most memorable and infamous races in their quest to become world champion.
