Diese Edition bildet erstmals das gesamte pianistische Oeuvre ab, das Backhaus für Decca eingespielt hat. Als besondere Beigabe liefert die Edition zwei Konzertmitschnitte, zum einen aus der Carnegie Hall 1954, zum anderen als Erstveröffentlichung den kompletten Mitschnitt von Backhaus letztem Konzert in Ossiach im Juni 1969. Dieser Konzertmitschnitt, entstanden eine Woche vor seinem Tod, enthält mit Schuberts Impromptu D 935 Nr. 2 das mutmaßlich letzte Stück Musik, das Backhaus je gespielt hat.

Wilhelm Backhaus verkörpert ein besonderes pianistisches Erbe: als Interpret eng mit Beethoven, aber auch mit Brahms und Schubert assoziiert, als Schüler des Leipziger Konservatoriums sowie Enkelschüler von Liszt, als politischer Mitläufer im Dritten Reich, später sehr erfolgreich im Konzert- und Schallplattengeschäft der Nachkriegszeit, ist er fürs deutsche Publikum bis heute einer der pianistischen Säulenheiligen.

50 Jahre nach Backhaus Tod ist nicht nur sein überragendes pianistisches Erbe, sondern auch manche Anekdote lebendig. Auf die Frage seines Plattenproduzenten, wie es denn war, Brahms persönlich zu treffen, und ob er ihm damals auch vorgespielt hätte, antwortete er lakonisch: "Nein aber das war zu seinem Nachteil".
