Until the appearance of the Model T, cars had been the preserve of the rich and were generally rare, expensive and relatively unreliable. Henry Ford and his engineering team refined the idea of the assembly line, greatly increasing its efficiency, and lowering the cost of production, which was key to the Model T's success.
