"Napiers Herbalists" of Edinburgh had inauspicious roots, they were founded in 1860 by Duncan Napier, a man with little formal education. Napiers' today has branches in Edinburgh and Glasgow, a successful mail-order business and continues to grow in the e-commerce age. This title tracks the history of "Napiers Herbalists", and places it in the context of increasing interest - and increasing competition - in modern complimentary medicine. The book may be read: as a history of Scottish herbalism; or for the stories of 19th Century Edinburgh and the Napier family; or as a study of how small businesses can prosper in the face of multinational competition.

Tom Atkinson was an RAF Commando in the Second World War, and worked for 20 years as an advisor to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. He established Luath Press in 1981 and has written a number of guidebooks to the Highlands. He became interested in herbal medicine when his long-standing duodenal ulcer was cured by a herbalist in Wales.
