The Haflinger, with its striking appearance, unmistakable colour and gentle nature, is rarely forgotten once seen. This book records the Haflinger's development from its early origins in the Tyrolean Alps onwards. It illustrates the progress of the breed from the time when just a few Haflingers first arrived in Britain in the 1960s.
The Haflinger, with its striking appearance, unmistakable colour and gentle nature, is rarely forgotten once seen. This book, which is the first to be written about the breed from the British point of view, records the Haflinger's development from its early origins in the Tyrolean Alps to the present day. Originally developed as an all-purpose farm horse sure-footed and hardy enough to survive in its mountain home, its re-appearance as an all round riding and driving horse is charted. Its versatility and ability to succeed in many diverse equestrian activities are well-documented here. Explanations of selective breeding, breeding standards and policy for the future are also given. The book illustrates the progress of the breed from the time when just a few Haflingers first arrived in Britain in the 1960s up until today, when approximately 500 animals are registered. The people who were influential in the early days of the Haflinger Society of Great Britain and the stallions and mares that are producing the next generation are all described.

Helen Deverill started riding as a child, but did not own her first horse until she bought ponies for herself and her daughter to show. She became interested in Haflingers in 1985 and has owned one since 1987. She was elected to the committee of the Haflinger Society of Great Britain in 1992 for a three-year term. For several years she was a regular contributor (under the name of Helen Coleman) of articles and stories for Pony magazine and the Pony Annual, as well as writing occasional articles for other equestrian publications, including Horseworld, Riding and The Pony Club Annual. In 1991 she edited and published the 20th Anniversary Souvenir Book for the Haflinger Society of Great Britain. Since 1992 she has edited and contributed to Focus on Haflingers, the quarterly newsletter of the Haflinger Society of Greta Britain. This is her first book.
