Whilst many of the species would be on any bird enthusiast's wish list, the list has been fiercely debated by two renowned birding authors, using various criteria to arrive at a top 100. Some species are endangered and therefore a must to see and conserve; others are quite common but have a particular plumage or behaviour that makes them exceptional; and others have a legendary status amongst birdwatchers and the layman, such as the dancing Red-crowned Cranes and the spectacular Gyr Falcon.

David Chandler has been watching birds for more than 25 years over three continents. He has worked for the RSPB and BirdLife International and is now a freelance writer and Environmental Educator. He is co-author of the RSPB Children's Guide to Birdwatching. He lives in Histon, Cambridge with his family. Dominic Couzens is a full time writer on birds and wildlife, contributing to a number of magazines, including Bird Watching, BBC Wildlife and the RSPB's Birds magazine, and has written many books, including the best-selling The Secret Lives of Garden Birds and My Family and 50 Other Animals. He lives in Frendown, Dorset with his family. His website is www.birdwords.co.uk.
