Iceland is unique. As the largest volcanic island currently on Earth, its landscape continues to be determined by the forces of nature to this day. These forces have also created a formidable environment, which can only be fully experienced as a hiker.

This book presents various hiking areas throughout the volcanic island. It describes 8 trekking tours and more than 40 hikes of varying lengths and difficulty.

This guide book shows why Iceland has become one of the most popular hiking destinations in recent years. Hardly any other country in the world offers such a variety of stunning landscapes over such a small area. From the nature reserve Fjallabak in the south, over the lava desert Ódáðahraun with the Askja volcano in the eastern highlands, to the scenic attractions at Mývatn and Jökulsárglúfur in the north – from the fjords of Hornstrandir in the far northwest, over the plateau of Kjölur and the coloured rhyolite mountains of Kerlingarfjöll in the central highlands, to the alpine-like massif of the Dyrfjöll in the east.

Each of the 12 hiking areas presented here is exceptional with its own unique features. The inner and outer forces of the Earth have shaped landscapes of rugged and often archaic beauty. Iceland is certainly worth several visits and the impressions from your journeys are sure to remain with you.

Iceland is a true paradise for hikers and an Eldorado for nature photographers.

Uwe Grunewald studied geosciences at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena (Germany), and the University of Bristol (UK), and has a PhD from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). Since first setting foot on Iceland in 1992, he has travelled extensively throughout the country and, every summer, continues to hike across the most scenic landscapes this volcanic island has to offer.
