Featuring 20 top outdoor locations, Explore Charleston Outdoors is your guide to hiking, biking, and more in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Best of Charleston in a Compact Guide

Whether you're a resident or are visiting from out of town, to fully experience everything Charleston has to offer, you need to get outside. Explore Charleston Outdoors offers the details you need to easily find 20 of the city's top outdoor locations and a wide variety of activities, including trails in gardens, wetlands, parks, and more. Along with hiking, biking, and paddling, you'll find thrilling sites for pursuits that require a bit more adrenaline, such as rafting, fishing, and ziplining. The full-color guide's pocket-sized format is great for a backpack or back pocket, and every site description includes maps, color photos, and directions. Written by Melissa Bigner and Molly Ramsey, local writers and outdoors enthusiasts, this is your guide to enjoying Charleston in the best possible way: outdoors!

Melissa Bigner moved to her adopted home of Charleston, South Carolina, almost 20 years ago and fell for the Lowcountry while rowing its ragged shoreline, running its cobblestone streets (not kidding), and riding her bike to the surrounding beaches. She's covered the area for guides like Fodor's and Moon Handbooks and for magazines like Coastal Living, Southern Living, Budget Travel, Orient Express, and Charleston, among many others. A graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, she has produced, styled, and written coffee table books, too, like Southern Bouquets, Cool Inside: Hank's Seafood Restaurant, and Served with Style: Peninsula Grill. For the past near-decade Melissa has served as editor of Charleston Weddings magazine, a role that gives her the perfect excuse to explore some of the most historic and storied properties and plantations in the country. She lives downtown with her husband and their bouncing baby boy, plus a minor gang of cats and pugs. Molly Ramsey is a writer, editor, and content creator living in Charleston, South Carolina. She serves as editor of House Calls, a health and wellness publication, and freelances for guides like Fodor's Travel and magazines, including Charleston, Charleston Weddings (where she was assistant editor for six years), and High Country Weddings, along with many others. Molly, who holds B.A.s in journalism and Spanish from the University of Mississippi, is a native of Lynchburg, Virginia. And though she grew up frolicking in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, today, she's a Palmetto State convert, a yogi, and avid jogger who gets her fill of the outdoors via gardening, kayaking, boating, and exploring South Carolina's Lowcountry on foot. She lives with her childhood sweetheart husband, Will, and their fur babies on James Island, just miles from their favorite speck of shoreline, Folly Beach.
