Practical guide to 37 selected walks all over the island of Madeira with trail maps, walks classified by fitness level and terrain difficulty, a range of itineraries for all walkers, and places to eat, what to see and transport information.
Practical guide to walking 37 selected walks all over the island of Madeira complete with trail maps, places to eat and transport information. Like a garden floating in the Atlantic, Madeira blooms year round with a diverse range of flora from all over the world, and walkers are spoiled with lush greenery even in the dry season from July to September. Yet Madeira offers much more than this: lovers of rugged, wild and natural landscapes will also find everything they could wish for in a perfect walking destination, right here.
The island features a jagged landscape with steep valleys and an indented coastline. Despite this, Madeira has something for everyone: from pleasant strolls along the levadas, the island's unique irrigation channels, to challenging walks of an Alpine character.
* 37 selected walks in all regions of the island - with trail maps at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000.
* Planning and selecting a walk - walks are classified by fitness level required as well as by difficulty of the terrain.
* Itineraries for all walkers - from easy strolls along the levadas (irrigation channels) to longer, more challenging hikes in the mountains.
* Practical information - getting to and from each walk by car or bus, plus places to eat along the way. * Walking profiles - showing altitudes reached, walking distance and walking time. * GPS tracks and waypoints - downloadable from the website.

Oliver Breda specialised in environmental studies at Hamburg University, graduating in 2000 and then spent five years on Madeira as a tour guide. He still visits the island each year and now also guides on the other Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking islands in the Atlantic. He has recently produced a book on the wild flowers of Madeira.
