Driven with a burning desire to make something of himself, Doug Smith calls upon his only marketable skills - those honed as an amateur boxer - and despite not learning to skate until the age of 19, punches his way into the world of professional hockey. Join Doug ""The Thug"" Smith during his unlikely journey as a minor-league hockey enforcer, the most unique and peculiar job in all of sport.
Directionless yet driven by a fervent desire to make something of himself, Doug "The Thug" Smith took his only marketable job skill--amateur boxing--and followed an unlikely career path to become a hockey enforcer, a.k.a. "goon." Entrusted with aggressively protecting his teammates from tough guys on the opposing team, he punched, elbowed and cross-checked his way up the ranks of minor league hockey to win a championship ring and the respect of his community. His entertaining underdog story is the subject of the cult-classic motion picture Goon (2011) and its sequel Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017).

Doug Smith has worked as a police officer in Massachusetts for more than two decades and as an assistant coach for the three-time state-champion Hanover High School hockey team. He lives in Halifax, Massachusetts. Adam Frattasio is an adult education teacher and author of Steroid Man: Confessions of a Powerlifter from the Golden Age of Enhancement (McFarland, 2016). His first book, GOON: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey, was adapted into the motion picture GOON and a sequel, GOON: Last of the Enforcers.
