Damaris Phillips is a southern chef in love with an ethical vegetarian. In Phillips's household, greens were made with pork, and it wasn’t Sunday without fried chicken. So she had to transform the way she cooks. In Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy, Phillips shares 100 recipes that embody the modern Southern kitchen: food that retains all its historic comfort and flavor, but can now be enjoyed by vegetarians and meat-lovers alike.
The book features Phillips’s most cherished entrees from her childhood made both with and without meat: Chicken Fried Steak becomes Chicken Fried Seitan Steak. Loaded Potato and Bacon Soup is now Loaded Potato and Facon Soup. She gives down-home side dishes a makeover by removing meat, adding international spices, and updating cooking techniques, and offers soul-satisfying, irresistible desserts that triumph over the meat-eater-versus-vegetarian divide, every time. Phillips found a way to make Southern food that everyone can enjoy, wherever they are on their culinary journey.
Damaris Phillips is a chef and the host of Southern At Heart on the Food Network. Phillips is the 2013 winner of Food Network Star, where she impressed judges with her fresh take on Southern cuisine, and won over the audience with her impeccable charm. Phillips has competed for charity on shows such as Cutthroat Kitchen, and Guy’s Grocery Games, and you can currently see her as a judge on the popular Food Network shows Guy’s Grocery Games and Beat Bobby. From Louisville, Kentucky, Phillips graduated from Jefferson Community and Technical College with a degree in culinary arts and now teaches at the same school inspiring up-and-coming chefs to follow their dreams. Before returning to teach, Damaris took on various restaurant and baking jobs, at 610 Magnolia under Chef Edward Lee, Wiltshire Pantry and Harvest Restaurant under Chef Coby Ming, Restaurant Nora in Washington DC, Bayona in New Orleans, and Le Bernardin in New York City, working in the front and back of house. One of five kids, Damaris learned to cook at an early age and was responsible for cooking one night a week for her large family. Damaris uses her wit and her traditional Southern cuisine to pack a one-two punch in the kitchen.
