It is a story which runs between Kentucky to New York to Tiperary, Baghdad and Dubai. It features old money as well as new and tells of amazing avarice. In the final reckoning, millions and millions of dollars were lost, as Americans like Bunker Hunt, Britains such as Robert Sangster - whose unofficial biography this partially is - and the Maktoums of Dubai sent prices though the roof at auctions fought with breathtaking daring. When it was all over, and his ambitions were in obeyance, at the end of 1991 Sangster still owned the two fastest two-year-olds in the country.
