This is a combination of travel book, history and reminiscence. Exploring through the prism of his own family, David Macfarlane traces the nature of the whole colonial experience in Newfoundland - Britain's first and oldest colony until controversial confederation with Canada in 1949.
A combination of travel book, history and autobiography. This is the story of David Macfarlane and his family if Grand Falls, Newfoundland. Such luminaries as Sir Humfrey Gilbert (who founded Newfoundland in 1583), Captain Kidd, Lord Northcliffe and, above all, the Goodyears - Macfarlane's own ancestors - connect in the book and their story mirrors that of the history of Newfoundland itself, Britain's oldest colony until independence in 1949.

David Macfarlane was born in Canada, in 1952, and was educated at the University of Toronto. A regular contributor to several magazines and one of Canada's leading journalists, he has won numerous national awards for his stories. He lives in Toronto with his wife and two children.
